The World Summit Award is a unique ecosystem for digital innovation.

The WSA selects local digital innovations and supports projects that have a significant positive impact on society and the environment.
The WSA combines an ongoing series of international events and activities with a global network of start-ups, social entrepreneurs, mentors, jurors, speakers, experts, heads of government, scientists and civil society.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the blueprint for a better and more sustainable future for all. The eight WSA categories are aligned with the SDGs.

World Summit Information Society

The World Summit on the Information Society was initiated by the UN to reduce the digital divide. The WSA is part of this process.

UNESCO Patronage

The WSA operates under the patronage of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Submission Criteria

  • Digital applications, websites, apps, IoT, wearables that provide concrete social value
  • Open to all Austria-based companies, individuals, associations and organizations
  • Launched and finished projects — no prototypes or concepts. Real impact must be demonstrable
  • Categories match the global World Summit Award
  • Participation is free

National Experts for Austria

One of the most important pillars of the WSA network is the National Experts. With their long experience in the ICT and business sectors, their diverse backgrounds and their personal social commitment, the National Experts are responsible for the national pre-selection.

WSA National Expert Emeritus — Mathias Haas

Mathias HaasEmeritus

Mathias is CEO and founder of SuperSocial, a social media consulting, impact and events agency; curator of TEDx events from Vienna to Brussels; president of POPEDU, a non-formal education association focused on digital literacy and diversity; World Economic Forum Global Shaper alumnus; university lecturer at FH Wien, FH Wieselburg, WU, EPFL & University of Zurich; and multiple-time WSA winner.

WSA National Expert Emeritus — Lena Köninger

Lena KöningerEmeritus

Lena has been part of the Austrian startup ecosystem for many years. She has experience in venture building, startup operations and financing. After a long time in small companies, she is now part of the strategy team at ÖBB. In her previous role at Female Founders, she designed one of Europe’s top 8 accelerators for diverse founding teams. Lena is also a member of the WEF Global Shapers Hub in Vienna.
